Sodium hypochlorite

Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) is a chemical compound used primarily as a disinfectant and a bleaching agent.

Solutions of sodium hypochlorite are used to disinfect drinking water, swimming pools, cooling water, raw water for industrial and for food processing equipment.
The pulp and textile industry use it as bleach. In household products sodium hypochlorite can be found in detergents and bleaches, such as Klorin.
Sodium hypochlorite breaks down spontaneously over time, heat and UV light accelerate the process. What remains is water and sodium chloride, i.e. salt.
