Flexible Storage Solutions at Hamina Terminal: “Listening to our customers helps us understand exactly what they need”

A comprehensive terminal network, combined with an extensive fleet of tanker trucks, ensures that Wibax is always close to the customer and able to respond to needs quickly and safely. At the core of Wibax’s logistics operations is the storage and transportation of liquid chemicals and bio-oils. These operations are essential to maintaining the seamless flow of Finnish industrial supply chains.

Juha Rissanen, Managing Director at Wibax Logistics Oy:n and Laura Lantta, Commercial Manager at Wibax Logistics Oy

The Hamina terminal stands out among Wibax’s Finnish locations, particularly due to its scale. Its storage capacity has increased by approximately 100,000 cubic meters from the previous 65,000 cubic meters. The terminal’s vast capacity is a key competitive advantage, creating significant added value for both Wibax and its customers.

By storing large volumes in Hamina, which is Finland’s easternmost port, Wibax can guarantee customers better security of supply and faster availability. With chemicals already in the country and situated close to industrial hubs, customers avoid long, costly transport routes and storage challenges.

Extensive Experience in Storing Various Chemicals

Wibax’s terminals store chemicals for the paper and pulp industry, among others, which are then transported and further processed. The end products become a part of Finns’ everyday lives, for example, in the form of packaging materials.

Wibax wants to emphasize that storage possibilities at the Hamina terminal are not limited to any specific chemical or specific volume requirements.

– We can store almost any liquid chemical in Hamina. Our tanks can be modified to meet customer needs, meaning we are very much open to all storage solutions. This is why we want to hear our customers’ views and suggestions, so we can understand exactly what they need, explains Laura Lantta, Commercial Manager at Wibax Logistics Oy.

When it comes to offering versatile storage solutions, Lantta wants to clarify that flexibility in tank sizes works both ways: customers’ storage needs do not have to be massive, as smaller units are also available.

Hamina Terminal Holds Great Strategic Importance

Wibax’s decision to expand the capacity of the Hamina terminal is a direct response to the growing demand for chemicals and the customers’ need for more comprehensive logistical services under one roof.

– The acquisition of the Hamina terminal is a central part of our growth strategy and our goal to offer customers more comprehensive end-to-end solutions and turnkey services for the entire supply chain. By owning the complete logistics chain, we can offer customers high flexibility and adapt to their specific needs, comments Juha Rissanen, Managing Director of Wibax Logistics Oy.

Wibax’s terminals store chemicals for the paper and pulp industry, among others, which are then transported and further processed.

– With our own logistics, large procurement volumes can be optimized to meet specific customer needs in terms of both quantity and scheduling, as industrial requirements for consumption and timing can vary significantly throughout the year. Wibax Logistics Oy specializes in adding value for customers specifically by synchronizing precise and timely deliveries, offered both as a comprehensive service and as individual components of the supply chain, Rissanen continues.

He notes that Hamina’s geographical location is also significant, as it offers good connections to both the railway network and sea routes:
– The terminal does not only serve Southeast Finland; it is a logistical hub from which we can reach customers across the entire country.

Wibax believes in the growth potential of various industrial chemical and raw material imports in Finland. Efficient and flexible logistics enable solutions tailored specifically to customer needs.

–This is precisely where Wibax aims to be a comprehensive service provider. Due to its location, Hamina creates excellent conditions for meeting customer needs both now and in the future, says Rissanen.

Sustainability at the Core of All Operations

The Hamina terminal, formerly owned by Neste, was built in the 1960s. Although the terminal has a long history, modern operations require continuous development.

Sustainability strongly guides Wibax’s activities and future goals, which is why both social and environmental responsibility issues must be carefully considered in terminal operations.

– The sustainable development of terminals depends largely on the product being stored and its specific requirements. If a product requires heating, for example, we actively seek sustainable ways to implement it. Wibax is committed to phasing out fossil fuels by 2030, and we are carrying out this transition at our terminals in close cooperation with our customers’ wishes, Rissanen comments.

Wibax Terminals Securing Finland’s Security of Supply

Although Wibax’s operations and processes may go unnoticed by the general public, their products and activities are vital and essential for the smooth daily lives of Finns. For example, Wibax’s products help produce clean tap water and sustainable packaging materials.

The strong foundation of Wibax’s operations is an extensive and strategically positioned network of terminals and transport services, which currently includes nine terminals along the coast from Kemi to Hamina. The transfer of Neste’s Hamina terminal to Wibax’s ownership at the end of 2025 underscores the company’s commitment to the Finnish market and the expansion of its operations. This is a significant logistical investment whose benefits extend beyond Wibax, directly impacting domestic customers and Finland’s security of supply.
