Sulphur dioxide is primarily used for the manufacture of sulphuric acid through further oxidation to sulphur trioxide, which together with water forms sulphuric acid.
Sulphur dioxide (SO) is a colorless gas that is used in the paper and pulp industry in the sulfite process for the manufacture of chemical pulp.
Since sulphur dioxide condenses at -10°C, the gas can readily be liquefied (with the use of dry ice) which allows for convenient transport.
The product also has applications in the food industry where it has E-number 320.
